The Second Matsuo Lab

Professor Yutaka Matsuo being interviewed

About the Second Matsuo Lab

In collaboration with Professor Yutaka Matsuo of the University of Tokyo, one of Japan’s leading AI researchers, ZEN University is establishing a new, concept-driven research lab. As AI continues to reshape industries and society, building theoretical knowledge alone is not enough. This lab is dedicated to empowering students with the practical skills to use AI effectively in real-world applications.

*Building on the educational framework and philosophy of the Matsuo-Iwasawa Lab at the University of Tokyo, the Second Matsuo Lab at ZEN University will operate as an independent entity. The lab will create unique opportunities for advancing AI research and practical applications within ZEN University's academic environment.

A Message from Professor Matsuo

Thriving in the Age of AI: Equipping Yourself with Essential Skills

I'm often asked, "How should we navigate life in the age of AI?" Honestly, this question is becoming increasingly difficult to answer. The speed of AI advancement is simply astounding. Take ChatGPT, the conversational AI released in November 2022—within just a few months, it sent shockwaves around the world.

With AI evolving at such a breakneck pace, it's almost impossible to give concrete advice to a first-year university student on how to "succeed" in the future. The four-year timeframe before they enter the workforce is dwarfed by AI's rapid, three-month breakthrough cycles. We can't predict what the world will look like even a year from now, let alone four.

This means the old model of anticipating change and preparing for a specific future is obsolete. We can no longer get ahead of AI's progress. In this era, adaptability is key—we must become adept at continuously adjusting to change and positioning ourselves to benefit from it.

At the Matsuo-Iwasawa Laboratory at the University of Tokyo, we are at the forefront of AI research, leveraging vast amounts of corporate data and deep learning techniques. At the Second Matsuo Lab at ZEN University, however, our focus is different. Here, we aim to equip students with the practical skills to use AI effectively in everyday life.
Learning about AI is no longer limited to understanding complex machine learning algorithms or designing AI systems. In an age where AI is ubiquitous, knowing how to use AI tools effectively is just as critical. Those who master this skill will be the ones to develop creative solutions and lead in their respective fields. My goal is to cultivate a new generation of students through both of these labs—individuals equipped not only with cutting-edge technical expertise but also with a strong foundation in the humanities and critical thinking.

The field of AI is brimming with opportunity and, above all else, is tremendously exciting. That's why I urge all young people to explore and embrace AI. In the years to come, AI will continue to advance, intertwining with every aspect of our lives and driving dramatic change. Now is the time to seize the opportunity and harness the power of AI. Join me in shaping this technological revolution. Let's study AI together and become the architects of a better future. At ZEN University, we will provide you with the knowledge and skills you need to succeed.
